Various errands

Several minor things taken care of and a few left to do. I have sent away my application to the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America now that I qualify for membership.

Yesterday, I called American Express to have them raise the limit on my new American Express card. I’ve never had an American Express card before and when it was issued to me, it had a $5,800 limit. That’s about 7 times less than the limit on my Mileage Plus Visa, and it makes it difficult to use for travel. For instance, I used it at the hotel in Rome as well as for the various car services and the bill came to something like $2,400. When I tried to use it at the hotel in London, it was declined. I wasn’t sure why at the time but I discovered why yesterday when I got the bill. It would have gone over the assigned credit limit. I called and explained that I used these cards for travel and the hotel bill in London alone was $4,000 and that the card is pretty much useless to me if I can’t use it for travel. They doubled the limit for me on the spot, which now makes it worth keeping.

I booked my car rental through Hertz for my trip to Morro Bay at the end of this month. Ever notice all of the ridiculous fees that get added on? There’s sales tax at 8.25%. There an “airport concession fee recovery” at 11.1%. There’s a “customer facility charge” at $10.00. And there is a “California tourism commission assessment” at 2.5%. Everyone, it seems, gets their cut. I’m paying $39.47/day for a full-sized car, which for 4 days should come to $157.88. Instead, with all the aforementioned taxes and tariffs added in, the bill comes to $205.17 or what amounts to about a 30% tax! Or looking at it another way, I could have rented the car for an addtional day for the cost of those taxes!

Bees have built a nest behind one of the shutters outside the front door of my house. I need to get some of that spray that kills them off, then wait until nighttime to use it in order to get rid of them. I’m not looking forward to that.

Errands and toys

I was up at 8 AM this morning and headed up to IHOP for a quick breakfast. From there, I headed to Saturn to have my car services (it was time for it’s 108,000 mile service, but since I’m driving up to Albany tomorrow, I wanted to make sure everything was in good working order anyway). My appointment was for 9 AM and I brought the car in at precisely 9 AM. I was very surprised when the car was returned and ready for me to take (having been washed and everything) by 9:25 AM!

From there, I headed to Circuit City. It’s been 2 years since my car has had a radio, the last one being stolen while the car sat in my driveway. I figured enough time had passed for my frustration to subside, and I caved in and bought the cheapest Pioneer radio I could find. It’s got a removable face plate, CD player, but best of all, has an AUX plug for my iPod so I can plug that right into my car stereo. It’s also nice that there is no longer a gaping hole in my dashboard.

While there, I also bought myself a little present and had that installed in the car as well: a Garmin StreetPilot C550 navigation unit. It’s pretty cool. It’s got a great color display, detailed maps of the entire U.S. and Canada, it’s voice activated, has BlueTooth built in so that I can make phone calls through it while I am driving, and has traffic alerts as well. I’ve wanted one of these for a while, ever since I got my handheld GPS unit for my birthday a year and a half ago, from vickyandnorm. This compliments that one. This one is perfect for the car. That one I can take with me when I travel. Of course, I can test the new one out driving up to Albany tomorrow to visit strausmouse and rmstraus.

After that, I headed over to the Hair Cuttery to get a haircut, which I desperately needed. And now, I am back home, going through the instruction book for the new nav unit. I still have a few more errands to run, but the major ones are done.

Heading off to the ballgame

Hours since I have slept: 4

I’m about to head off to the Orioles/Angels game. I spent most of the morning nearly completing my travel binder, which has everything I need in it at this point. It’s divided into 8 sections: (1) Air Travel; (2) Venice; (3) Cruise; (4) Rome; (5) London; (6) Customs (copies of receipts for stuff like my laptop and iPod, as well as a photocopy of my passport); (7) Reference (important phone numbers as well as photocopies of the front/back of my drivers license, credit cards and medical insurance card; (8) Consular (the most current consular information for Rome, Greece, and the UK).

I also registered my trip with the State Department.

It’s a beautiful day for baseball today; I’m heading out to enjoy the game.

T-minus 33 hours and counting

Hours since I have slept: 1

Thus begins the countdown to my departure to Europe tomorrow. And thus also begins the counting of how many hours I have gone without sleep. My plan is pretty simple. From this point forward, I don’t plan on sleeping until I get on the plane tomorrow evening. After I get on the plane and eat some dinner, I plan on trying to get 6-7 hours worth of decent sleep. This way, by the time I get to Venice, I will have forced myself into a schedule 6 hours ahead of what I am now. I figure it will actually take two days. I’ll be pretty tired Tuesday evening and therefore be able to get a good night’s sleep then as well, leaving me in tip-top form for when we board the ship on Wednesday.

Each of my posts between now and when I get on the plane tomorrow evening will start off with how many hours it has been since I’ve slept so that you can follow along on this adventure with me. Since I woke up at about 7:45 this morning, it’s been about 1 hour so far.

I did get a good deal of my packing done last night. I still have more to do today but the bulk of it is done at this point. I’ve got some more chores to do and errands to run. And I’ve got the Orioles/Angels game to go to later this afternoon. But there is really only one good way to start a 36-hour long day: with breakfast! So I’m off to IHOP to get something to eat.

Saturday errands, part 3

I had lunch at Chevy’s (I was craving the table-side guacamole) and when I got back home, I accomplished several more tasks:

I upgraded my return flight from London/Heathrow to Business Class. I was 470 miles short of what I needed, but sometime last night, my 4,000 bonus miles for joining United’s Red Carpet Club came through and I was able to upgrade my flight. I made use of Seat Guru to make sure I chose good seats in Business Class on the return flight. (I also changed my seat on my outbound flight to a better seat–at least according to Seat Guru.) Now both of the long legs of my trip have been upgraded to United Business. I’ve flown Business on a 777 before and in my opinion, business class on a 777 is far better than First Class on a 2-class airplane, like a 757.

Having done that, I began to collect all of my itineraries and other travel-related information into a binder. I’ve got all of the paperwork in page-protectors, and organized in the order of the trip, with a reference section at the back. It includes my notes and recommendations that I’ve gathered for the various cities, in the proper order. It even has tips on the various airports I will be going to. I know it sounds a little OCD, but I’ve never traveled internationally before and I want to make sure I’ve got everything in order. The system may collapse once I realize everything is easier than it sounds, but at least with my binder, I’ll be relatively stress-free.

I photocopied my passport data page, which is recommended, so that you can keep it in your stateroom on the ship.

I completed all but one load of laundry, the last being a small load that I’ll do tomorrow to basically take care of what I was wearing today and yesterday.

I called Rich and left a message for him. Today was the last day of his fellowship at USC and I believe tomorrow he begins his Air Force career. I also called Dan and talked to him for a little while. I talked to strausmoue as well just before getting a haircut this morning. And I talked to Mom and Dad a few times today as well.

Tonight, I’ll begin the actual process of packing. But for now, I’m taking a break. It’s been a busy day and I’m going to watch TV and chill out for a little while.

Saturday errands, part 2

I managed to get a few more items checked off my list, after having spent some time sending two mass-emailings to just about everyone I know, telling them that my first story is available.

I headed over to Greenbelt and got a haircut. I also finally got around to getting myself a couple of new swim suits from Old Navy. (I didn’t stop just there. I also got another pair of short, as well as some more shirts, socks, and boxers for the cruise.)

After I got home, I mowed the lawns, front and back. I also did another load of laundry and I have only a few more loads to go now.

I still have some running around to do. I need to get something to eat. I haven’t eaten anything at all today and I’m pretty hungry at the moment. When I get back, I’m going to begin packing my clothes for the trip. I also have some additional cleaning around the house to do which I hope to get done today.

To be continued…

Saturday errands, part 1

I cleaned up the table in the kitchen, which was piled with junk mail and bills and other stuff that was preoccupying me and I figured getting it all cleaned up would be a good place to start. That didn’t take too long. In doing so, I also paid the rest of the bills that are coming up due while I am on vacation.

I ran two loads of laundry first thing this morning. I have another two or three loads to do before Monday, but I can spread that out now.

I headed up to Petco to get some more food for Zeke. When I got back, I got him into his carrier (much to his dismay) and took him over to the vet to be boarded. I gave them instructions for his feeding and also emergency contact information. He also took plenty of his food with him. He will be there until pick him up on the afternoon of July 23. I feel bad about leaving him there so long (the longest I’ve boarded him prior to this was for 15 days back in October/November 2005), but given his health problems a few years back, I thought it would be the safest thing to do.

Oh, and I managed to get the pictures from happy hour uploaded.

It’s a pleasant day temperature-wise, but it’s very muggy out, as it was yesterday so I’ve got the AC on to keep the air dry. I’ve got some yard work to do later today. And a whole bunch of other errands to take care of. More on this later…

More tasks checked off!

I completed a whole bunch of work-related tasks today and feel pretty good about where things stand with me about to head off on vacation. I also got several more travel-related tasks taken care of today.

I picked up my suit from the cleaners.

I contacted the local police and filled out a “vacation patrol” request form. This means that the police know I will be out of town and will be keeping an eye on the house.

I called vickyandnorm and left them a message regarding a question about hotel-to-airport transportation in Rome.

I got rid of just about everything in my refrigerator and emptied out a bunch of other trash (tomorrow is a trash pick-up day).

I’ve still got a number of things to take care of tomorrow, and I know that Saturday will be a busy day, cutting the grass and cleaning up the yard a bit. But Saturday is also supposed to be somewhat cooler than it was today–it hit nearly 100 here with the heat index. It’s a good think our softball game was rescheduled.

I’m also more than 420 pages through American Prometheus. I’m going to squeeze in a little more reading tonight and then lights out.

Please don’t freeze my account!

Thanks to some good advice from he11o_sunshine, I called my credit card company yesterday and let them know that I would be out of the country for 3 weeks and that I would be using my credit card in a variety of places in Europe.

They were very good about it. They took down the dates that I would be gone, and told me that information would be factored into the algorithms used to determine if possible fraudulent charges are being made on the card. So I shouldn’t have to worry about my account being frozen while I am gone.

Thanks, Jen!

More travel tasks

More vacation prep today. I filled out the online form to put a hold on my mail while I am gone. I also paid the rent in order to make sure I didn’t forget that one. I took my black suit in to be cleaned and pressed. I can pick it up tomorrow. I also started collecting all of my travel-related itinerary information in a binder so that I have it all easily accessible in one place.

The humidity jumped up today. The temps were in the mid-80s but with the humidity it was 90 and even now, at 10:40 PM, the air conditioning is blasting just to keep the house cool.

I”m about 380 pages through American Prometheus and I am really enjoying it. I’d like to finish it before I get on the plane on Monday but I think I’ve got a good chance of doing that.

The softball game we had schedule for Wednesday has been postponed because the Senate office we are playing is busy with some issues on the HIll. It will be rescheduled for later in the season. As much as I love playing softball, it was kind of a relief to hear that it was postponed this week. I’ve got so much to do already that organizing a team for a game was something that I could do without this week. And besides, it was supposed to be well into the 90s on Wednesday.

Another happy hour is scheduled for Friday and I’m looking forward to that. And I’ve got the O’s/Angels game on Sunday to look forward to as well.

Rachel hasn’t been feeling well but I hear she’s feeling a little better tonight, which is good. I hope she feels a lot better soon.

Okay, off to bed.

Errands and meetups

Today turned out to be busier than I expected. I was up at 8:00 AM and headed to IHOP for breakfast. I stopped to get some food for Zeke and then ran a number of other errands. I paid a few bills, mailed a out a copy of my new lease to my landlord, and compiled and sent my travel itinerary info to Norm and Vicky so that someone on the East Coast knows where I will be when I am away next month. I also picked up some new shorts and a hat from Old Navy.

Kent mentioned that they were going to be at Smithsonian today, but I didn’t have his phone number. Working through Pam, however, I managed to get it and found out they were at the Air & Space museum. I headed down there and met them in the cafeteria and spent a couple of hours with then as they roamed through a few exhibits that they hadn’t already seen, and then walked to the Washington Monument.

Afterward, I headed over to Austin Grill to meet up with A.J. and we spent perhaps 2 hours eating and catching up. It was good to see him.

In the evening, I went for a walk and did the loop twice instead of once because it was so nice out.

I got a copy of a letter from Barry to a the tree-trimming people letting them know what he wanted done in the yard. I don’t know when they will be coming, but I’m looking forward to it because they bamboo is really getting overgrown and I haven’t had the time to keep up with it.

Getting ready to fly

I was up just before 7 AM and logged into work, since I am working from home this morning. I took care of a few work-related tasks and then collected Zeke and his things and brought him over to the vet at about 8 AM to be boarded while I am in L.A.

I’ve still got a little packing to do but that should go quickly. My flight to L.A. got in a little early last night. It’s currently scheduled to get into L.A. “on time” tonight. If all goes well, that means I’ll be in L.A. at just after 8 PM Pacific time. I’m waitlisted for an upgrade to business class, but I don’t think it’s likely that I’ll get it. It can’t hurt to try, however. The flight is at 5:50 PM and I’ll probably head for the airport between 3 and 3:30 PM.
