30 day song challenge, day 12: a song from a band you hate

This is a tough one. First, the directions are a little tricky: not a song that you hate, but a song from a band that you hate. Second, I’m having a hard time thinking of a band that I really hate. The problem is that I generally only listen to music (and therefore bands) that I like and so it’s hard to come up with one that I don’t like very much. In fact, I am hard-pressed to think of even one band that I hate.

That said, there are certainly some bands that I like far less than others. In some cases it is because their music has been drilled into my via osmosis. One of these bands is The Smiths. My good friend, Dan, loved The Smiths and played their music constantly when we were in college. It always seemed exceedingly depressing to me and the music just never clicked with me. (Ditto Morrissey and The Cure.) That said, there is one song I can stand listening to from The Smiths because it seems to me to be their most upbeat song:

Ask by The Smiths.

In the incredibly unlikely event that you’ve never heard the song before, here is the video. (Also, it has been a long time since I’ve seen that video and yikes!: it is uniformly awful in my opinion.)

  1. The Smiths aren’t depressing. I love them. And I’m the most optimistic person ever! 😮 They are just very hard to understand! Dan obviously knows his music, and you… well… don’t. 🙁
