I just woke up from unsettling dreams to find myself transformed in my bed into a giant idiot. I should have bought those books right away! I came into the office and checked email and saw that many people agreed. Not only that but, rubysnina (a.k.a Mom) and bigblu4 (a.k.a. Dad) have generously offered to buy one of the books for me as a birthday present!
So I just went online and purchased both books from Powell’s, and had them shipped 2nd day air. It was my single biggest Powell’s purchase ever, at $445 + shipping.
So what were these books I was so excited about? Keep in mind that only a collector would be (a) as excited and (b) crazy about to pay this much for the books. I do collect books, in particular, Isaac Asimov books. I’ve managed to come across many rare copies through Powell’s over the years, including three signed copies of various books. But these two particular books have eluded me, or, when I have seen them at other used book stores, have been in the range of $300+. Finally, Powell’s had them and they are mine (I’ve got an order number and everything!):
1. Asimov’s Annotated Don Juan by Isaac Asimov. This was the $250 book.
2. Asimov’s Annotated Gilbert & Sullivan by Isaac Asimov. This was the $195 book.
These books nearly complete the “annotations” portion of my Asimov collection. I already own The Annotated Gulliver’s Travels, and Familiar Poems, Annotated. The only one I am missing now is Asimov’s Annotated Paradise Lost. I’ll find it eventually, I’m sure.
When the books arrive, I’ll post some triumphant photos. For now, back to bed.
