Writing woes

Well, that may be exaggerating a bit. I’m going to the gym more frequently and when I am at the gym, working out, I am frequently thinking about my stories. I do this all of the time anyway. At work or on the train it is no big deal because if I hear a good piece of dialog in my head or figure out how to handle a particular plot complication, I can just jot down a note. It’s trickier at the gym. This morning, halfway through my cardio routine, I thought of inserting a few words into the opening paragraph of my newest story; it seemed to me those those few words would give the lead of the story some extra umph. The problem was I was on the elliptical machine. And I had another 20 minutes to go! There was no way I could write it down. Fortunately, it was only a few words, and easy to remember. But what if it were more complicated? Sometimes, I “hear” whole passages of dialog going through my head. There’d be no way to capture it on paper at the gym. I guess this is one of the downsides of working out. On the other hand, it gives me a good opportunity to practice some memory-improving exercises.
